PDR’s focus on applied research relies on continued successful industrial collaboration. This contact is delivered through contract research and knowledge transfer mechanisms to create a two-way dialogue between firms and PDR. This communication is exploited to develop better practices in all aspects of product design and development. In response to the economic environment in which PDR operates, the centre’s purpose is to improve the design capabilities of companies in order that such organisations might realise the business rewards of better product development practice. PDR’s design research examines both the macro and micro environments for the effective application of product design. This strategy is achieved through three research themes: - Practice; - Management; - Policy. PDR’s research programmes have direct relevance both to industry and the needs of individuals and the wider community. PDR collaborates with many small manufacturing companies as well as major multi-national organisations, government agencies, charities and hospital trusts. Collaborative Knowledge Transfer projects and activities include 39 completed Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with both SMEs and large companies and our Medical Applications Group working with hospital trusts, utilising design technologies for the development of prostheses and surgical planning. |
